Catherine Carouge is Vice President and Creative Director at Weitzman Agency, a full service advertising, digital, and social agency in the beautiful Annapolis, MD. Catherine is a very hard working and charismatic leader in this social industry and I had the pleasure of interviewing her.
Catherine’s mother was a writer and graphic designer, which led to Catherine’s early interest in this industry. She says she turned to writing and graphic design rather than photography or art, because it allows her to be “creative and mildly lucrative.” Catherine took a class in college where she was required to create advertising campaigns for existing brands, and that is when she fell in love with the entire creative process. After interning with several companies while she was in college, Catherine then began an internship with Weitzman Agency and has worked her way up since. She credits her hard work and ability to be a team player for her success in the company now.
At Weitzman, Catherine is responsible for creating and executing creative strategy for a wide variety of clients. She says no day is the same at the agency and she loves that everyday is different. With all the different clients the agency represents, Catherine is sometimes writing and designing and other times she oversees another designer’s work. Catherine told me “she never gets bored” while at work, and I find that very important and attractive in a career.
Weitzman Agency uses Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram as their main social media platforms. Catherine’s personal favorite is Instagram because of the interaction they are able to have with their clients. For a brief period of time Weitzman used Vine, which Catherine says is “a lot of fun, but it was very time consuming.”
Catherine claims that the most rewarding aspect of her job is her company’s interaction with non-profits. She works with clients that help save the Chesapeake Bay, protect and empower victims of domestic abuse, as well as pet adoption organizations. She finds it very rewarding to know that her work can help in these clients’ efforts. On the other hand, the most challenging aspect of Catherine’s profession is working with difficult clients. It takes patience and diligence to work with them and help reach their goal. Catherine notes that “unfortunately clients don’t always love your first idea. Or your second. And sometimes they don’t know what they want until they see it.” I think it’s important to have this patience and calm demeanor that Catherine has, so that frustrating and time-consuming situations don’t hinder her creative ability.
After an incredibly eye-opening, fun, and inspiring interview with Catherine, I asked what advice she had for someone trying to get involved in her field. She responded with— “Get ready to work hard. This isn’t your typical 9-5 job. But when you find the right workplace, inspiring colleagues and clients, it’s well worth it.”
