This week in class we watched a documentary called “Generation Like”. While our entire class was live tweeting, we watched how teens in today’s world do absolutely insane things when it comes to fame and social media. There is so much that I saw in the video that it literally left me speechless... I’ll try my best to explain what I learned.
Like I said, I was left speechless by the end of the film. I LOVED watching the documentary, especially with the live tweeting feature, it really made the experience to show how drastic and real #GenerationLike really is.
- When I was a crazy Jonas Brothers and Twilight fan, I never had social media to take my obsession to the next level. This Hunger Games fan was considered a “professional fan” as she posted and maintained several social media accounts related to the movie
- Social media sites used to be for networking and connecting with friends, now it is ALL about money and who can advertise the most
- At this point in the film I looked around the classroom to see everyone face down into their phones and computers live-tweeting as we were watching a documentary about a social-media crazed generation…. #ironic
- One kid is YouTube famous and casually talks about having 300,000 followers. How did he get there? He’s what, like 12?!?!?!?!
- Okay then there was Baby Scumbag
- Actually 12.
- Skater? Comedian? Creep?
- Creates viral YouTube videos of much older girls ‘twerking’ on him…
- They’re wearing Hooters shirts.
- Has corporate sponsors at 12 years old. That sponsor his gross behavior.
- Where are his parents?!?!?!
- Moving on… teens these days OBSESS over the likes on their posts and how perfect they look. It makes me so sad to see how going outside to play with friends has been replaced by Snapchatting them your latest selfie with loads of makeup on
- When you think celebrities are tweeting you back, it’s actually their publicist and assistant that are acting as them
- I am SO glad that I am part of a generation that grew up appreciating face-to-face interaction instead of entirely digital, hide-behind-a-screen communication that I’ve seen
- I thought Baby Scumbag’s parents were awful, then we see this mom of an “insta-celeb” who supported and helped her daughter explain that she gets more likes and more followers when she poses with fewer clothes on.
- What is the world coming to??
